personality
To the average individual, Rabastan is utterly refined and well mannered. He is a Lestrange son and he knows it. As the "spare", he has never felt the absolute responsibility to the name that Rodolphus no doubt wears, but he understands the privileges inherent in being a Lestrange. Through his father’s teachings and his older brother’s guidance Rabastan has always been proud of the history and the heritage of his family, and even more proud of the fact that his family has been so solid in their beliefs and their family lines over the centuries. He is extroverted, although not hugely so, preferring to spend time among his close friends and family. He does delight in the opportunity to show his privilege in company, a reality that can come across as arrogant to any he considers unworthy. Worthiness comes in the form of integrity – in Rabastan’s mind this means utter and complete devotion to the Dark Lord and the promotion of Wizarding culture - Of course wealth, power, and influence may add to your worthiness as well. Luckily for Rabastan, the two often run hand in hand in his world.

Rabastan is a patient and determined man. He wants results in the way that he perceives they should take place, but he is quite willing to work towards a process over a length of time. He is typically practical and hands on in any situation. He is less worried with the theory and discussion of abstract ideas, leaving theoretical reading to his older brother, rather he prefers to perform the action required to make those ideas take shape. He is less an idea-man and more a man of action, albeit he prefers that action to shape the world into the way he believes it should be and he resists change that suggests another alternative.

Rabastan enjoys the finer things of life. He was raised in wealth and privilege, and he is uncomfortable in any other setting. He wants his life to be comfortable and full of ease, and he can be materialistic in his pursuit of this life. During his time in Azkaban, this need was one of the most difficult aspects of his imprisonment: a lack of food, warmth, and anything resembling the comfort of the life he had once known. Azkaban has worsened this desire and since his release he is more materialistic than he was before, demanding the best in everything. On the other hand, this very situation created in him a steely resolve to never find himself lacking in these things again. Upon leaving Azkaban, the Dark Lord found himself a servant far less complacent and more devoted in regards to the Cause, than had entered the prison.

Rabastan is serious, with a dry sense of humour that can be lost on those who do not know him well. He completes any task that he undertakes with the utmost of care. He is a perfectionist, and requires absolute cleanliness and neatness from his surroundings. Again Azkaban has reinforced this need to an extreme, and a lack of cleanliness is one of the things that will tip his temper. His house elves are well trained and any messes left about his manor will result in a punishment for them.

Although pre-Azkaban he was extremely slow to anger, with his release, Rabastan is more likely to be able to be provoked. When he does, he has quite a temper, and typically requires time to calm down before he can forgive a slight. Slights to his family or the culture and cause that he has given himself to will not be easily overlooked. Although Rabastan’s family is not particularly given to the display of emotions felt, he is absolutely loyal to those he has offered his devotion: the Dark Lord, his family, and his wife Danielle. He regards loyalty and faithfulness as essential aspects to the society that he and his family have given everything to build. He prefers tradition and stability and strives to keep his life uncomplicated and methodical, with an emphasis on those whom he considers to be worthy of his attentions.

Rabastan has a strong sense of justice, which might seem odd in a Death Eater, but in his mind, the Dark Lord and the new era that they are fighting for is the best thing for the Wizarding World. Those who do not display the proper integrity deserve the punishments that are meted out to them. Although he dislikes the mess of many assignments required from him he is willing to make those sacrifices for the cause and sees it as his duty to do so.

Father [1927]; Alcander Lestrange »
Rabastan’s father was a formidable figure in his life. He learned at an early age that any word of his father was to be taken quite seriously. Rabastan’s father taught him the history of the Lestrange family, and his numerous predictions, discussions, and warnings about Muggles, the degrading of Wizarding culture, and what might be to come if the Muggle progressives had their way had as deep an impact on Rabastan as they had his elder brother. Rabastan was, and even at forty still is, deeply respectful of his father’s authority.

Mother [1930]; Thubana Lestrange »
In truth Rabastan is distant from both of his parents although he probably felt closer to his mother than his father. It is from her that he gets his social nature, and he used to peek through the banister at the parties she gave watching the people as they moved from room to room until the governess or nanny would lead him away.

Brother [1950]; Rodolphus Lestrange »
Rodolphus LestrangeFrom learning to read, to the dueling club, to becoming a member of the Dark Lord’s circle, Rodolphus’ impact can be felt and seen as clearly as the Dark Mark on Rabastan’s arm. Rabastan respects his older brother tremendously even though as a child they were able to spend only a few weeks of the year together. There is no one whose advice Rabastan trusts quite so much as he trusts Rodolphus, and there are few who know him so well. Although both men have Inner Circle status and are well respected in the Death Eater ranks, Rabastan still considers Rodolphus his superior in many ways and will yield to his judgement.

Sister-in-law [1951]; Bellatrix Lestrange »
Bellatrix LestrangeRelationship.

Wife; Danielle Edgecombe Lestrange »
Danielle LestrangeWith the Dark Lord's successes, Rabastan felt that the time had come to get married and to think about an heir for the Lestrange line. He was attracted to Danielle and the two had maintained a discreet affair, but with her married status, he knew that he would need to look elsewhere for an heir. Rabastan trusted her and felt her opinion was valuable and so he had asked her for her assistance in selecting a proper wife. When Danielle's husband had passed away, the opportunity was obvious. He was comfortable with her and cared for her-in his own way. He married her in December of 2002.

The two have a comfortable partnership – both within the Death Eater’s Inner Circle. Danielle is an excellent hostess, something he truly appreciates as he both enjoys parties, and enjoys being known for having excellent ones.

Stepdaughter; Marietta Edgecomb »

Other Friends; Inner Circle Des presumably »

appearance

6'3"; 19 stone; Blue eyes; Brown hair

Rabastan inherited the Lestrange family height although not to the extent of his older brother. Still at well over six feet Rabastan can be an intimidating presence. When he was released from Azkaban he was quite emancipated, but now several years later he has filled out. His obsession with cleanliness and neatness means that he is very careful of his robes and outward appearance. He is nearly always impeccably groomed, and fastidious with maintaining personal hygiene.

Rabastan carries himself easily, well aware of the fact that he is both handsome and intimidating. To his friends and colleagues, he is typically confident and handsome, and charming. Although his presence is self-assured and confident at most times, post-Azkaban he is more likely to look over his shoulder when he is uncomfortable. It is a nervous habit left over from years of Dementors, filth, and freezing cold misery, and even now that he is safe, in control, and well-cared for, it can reoccur during moments of unease. When he is faced with traitors and those of filthy blood, his demeanor can change absolutely and he will use every advantage of his height and build to intimidate and bully those individuals as necessary.

During school, Rabastan played and watched Quidditch. He was also a reasonably good dueller thanks to his elder brother's tutelage. He enjoyed making friends in the Slytherin common room and could often be found in the common room discussing politics, culture, and in some cases putting his patience to work playing Wizard's Chess.
These days, Rabastan still enjoys watching Quidditch. He does enjoy a good evening's dinner with colleagues and friends, and will engage in political discussion during these meals. Outside of this, he always enjoys a game of Wizard's Chess with a worthy opponent, and has been known to spend evening hours reading, although he is not as glued to books as his elder brother Rodolphus is.
biography

Childhood;
Rabastan's childhood was a quiet one. Born in spring of 1961, the year that his older brother Rodolphus would away to Hogwarts, Rabastan's first years were nearly like those of an only child. He was raised by nannies and the odd house elf. Due to the age difference between them, by the time Rabastan was old enough to truly get to know Rodolphus, his elder brother was nearly out of school and looking towards marriage and the calling of the Death Eaters. Young Rabastan, although hardly old enough to understand the reality behind what his brother was participating in, was determined that someday he too would be among the group of his brother's friends, respected, and ready to do his part to support the culture and history they were a part of.

Around the age of six, Rabastan's parents hired one of the best tutors in England to teach their son the beginnings of reading, writing, and Magical culture and history. Rabastan particularly loved to read and listened carefully to the histories he was taught with a special emphasis in Quidditch rules, history, and players. Additionally, as he grew older he looked forward to the brief moments of time when he could talk to his older brother. Rabastan saw Rodolphus as a role model - someone he could truly look up to and emulate yet who, possibly because of age, was more approachable than his father.

Alcander Lestrange was an imposing figure in Rabastan's youth. His father's strongly voiced opinions about politics, the state of the world, and the responsibilities of the Lestrange family made their impact on the young boy. Rabastan learned early that if he disagred with his father on anything, he would do well to hold his tongue. His father's desires and commands were meant to be obeyed absolutely, and anything less resulted in punishment. It was a harsh realisation, the first time he crosses his father, but also one that has served him well in his service to the Dark Lord.

Hogwarts;
Rabastan arrived at Hogwarts in Autumn of 1972 eager to begin his career at Hogwarts. He was determined to be in Slytherin house. He knew that his father and elder brother would be unlikely to accept his membership in any other house and so initially when the hat was placed upon his head, he felt a sense of worry that perhaps he would not be good enough for Slytherin. As it turned out his worry was not completely unfounded. The hat briefly considered both Gryffindor and Hufflepuff before declaring very certainly 'Slytherin' was the place for Rabastan. With a sigh of relief, Rabastan made his way to the Slytherin table, to join others who would be Death Eaters or supporters in their adult years.

As they begin studies, Rabastan found that he particularly enjoyed charms, transfiguration and defense, and of course Quidditch. He was not small, but he was fast in his third year he was given the position of Chaser on the Slytherin Quidditch team. Rabastan also enjoyed the Duelling club and during the summers took opportunity to practise with his brother whenever Rodolphus was willing so that he could improve. Although he was not the best in the duelling club, he performed well enough and he improved with every year.

Rabastan was a moderately good student and received his prefect's badge for his fifth year. Rabastan was delighted with the honour and took the position extremely seriously. It was an opportunity to prove that he could be a leader and could promote better practises among the Slytherins students and indeed the Pureblood students in any house. During the summer of his NEWT years, he applied himself to the study of subjects that would be found in the Restricted Section.

His seventh year brought about some changes for Rabastan. The first was in the form of a blonde haired young pureblood woman, a sixth year, she caught Rabastan's eye and although he knew he would wish to wait until they had both finished school, he spent a goodly amount of time attempting to capture Cleodna's heart. Cleodna was completely different from any of the other young women in Slytherin, or in Rabastan's opinion, any of the young women anywhere. Although perfectly mannered, she had a quirky sense of humour that was unique: different from anything Rabastan was used to, and utterly intriguing to him. He determined that he would wait until she had completed Hogwarts, but would then approach her father for permission to court her.

At the midway point of his seventh year, his brother brought him to take the Dark Mark and Rabastan left Hogwarts a fully fledged member of the Dark Lord's army.

First War;
Once he had completed Hogwarts, Rabastan left and was able to fully throw himself into devotion to the cause. With his elder brother to guide him he carried out missions requested of him. Rabastan’s sense of justice helped him as he assisted the Death Eaters in systematically destroying those that moved against them. The Death Eaters and the Dark Lord’s cause seemed to be progressing very well, and Rabastan began to turn his mind to the family that he knew he would want to began in the new world.

Rabastan approached Cliodna's father in the summer of 1980, and the courtship was agreed to. Things seemed as if they were going well for Rabastan. The Dark Lord's cause was progressing, he had a beautiful fianceé, and he had the rest of his life completely planned out. Unfortunately, a little dark haired boy was going to disrupt all of those plans. After events at Godric's Hallow, Rabastan joined his brother and his sister-in-law in searching for any sign that the Dark Lord was still alive. Together they tortured the Longbottom's, and it was this that was to earn him a life-sentence in Azkaban along with Rodolphus and Bellatrix.

Azkaban;
Azkaban is a period of Rabastan’s life that he would like to forget altogether although it continues to haunt him. Although there is likely no one made for Azkaban, Rabastan’s social and active nature, compared with his love for comfort and cleanliness made him utterly unsuited to the environment of solitude, cold, filth, and Dementors. Rabastan retreated into his shell in the environment, becoming sullen, filled with only the memories of Cleodna’s face – memories that tormented him even more when the Dementors passed his direction.

The second war & New Era;
Rabastan left Azkaban a thin and haunted looking man. The in and the out of the first year was even more difficult for him than the past.

As the New Regime began to shape up, Rabastan was pleased to find his place within it. Although he still felt as if Dementors lurked over his shoulder, giving him an almost twitchy mannerism, Rabastan was beginning to heal – at least physically. Proper food, rest, and exercise began to fill him out again, although the internment had left lasting emotional scars. He sought out one of the old Lestrange estates and with fervor second only to his duty to the Dark Lord; he began to clean, to polish, and to restock the home into a place of wealth and beauty. There was nothing too good for the home building Rabastan sought to turn into a home. He accepted the position of Head of the Department for the Control of Magical Creatures and having always had a fondness for the beasts.

Home secured, position within the new government certain, Rabastan turned towards the other uncertainties of his life seeking to align them into how he felt they should be. The one thing Azkaban had not tainted was his patience, and so wife (and heirs) seemed to be the next thing necessary for his perfect life, but he was willing to give it some time to make that come about. His affairs with Danielle, a married colleague, while physically satisfying, would not satisfy the need for an heir, and so he turned to her for advice on whom the woman should be that would give him an heir.

It was during this time that he received an affirmative to receive a slave. The blonde slip of a girl arrived into his care and Rabastan thought very little of it. It was his duty as a servant of the Dark Lord to take a slave and to be the proper example those who were looking at the Ministry and the purebloods to provide. Luna Lovegood was a surprise to him however. Her sense of humour and remarkable ability to remain positive in the most ridiculous of situations reminded Rabastan much of his lost love. Although she was obviously much younger than Cliodna would have been, the memories she brought to the surface perhaps healed Rabastan emotionally after the draining experience that had been Azkaban.

When Danielle’s husband died, Rabastan saw the opportunity to take what was a illegitimate physical and emotional partnership and turn it into one that they could share with the world. He asked Danielle to marry him and she (to his relief) agreed. They were married in December, and were given only a brief period of time before he would be sent to Poland on diplomatic business for the Dark Lord.

  • Luna's release.

Rabastan will be returning from Poland, in time to see his beautiful wife become Minister of Magic. Rabastan is looking forward to seeing her, but feels some trepidation about how to best explain to her, to his brother, and the rest of his family, why he felt compelled to allow Luna to escape. The Slytherin part of him has turned over many excuses and individuals to blame, but he has yet to determine precisely how what he will say to his elder brother. Because he is a Lestrange, the idea has simply not occurred to him that there might be any great punishment for the indiscretion.
